Background

Where learning is not a given

In the area around Bodh Gaya, access to education is still far from universal. Working with our local partners, we have observed the following:

Access to public schools is limited, and opportunities for quality education are scarce
Some children have to work because of their families’ financial circumstances
Educational opportunities for girls are especially restricted
Learning materials, stationery, and even safe spaces to learn are in short supply

Building the Terakoya

Constructing and renovating learning spaces, and providing desks, chairs, and other equipment

Learning Materials & Stationery

Textbooks, notebooks, pens and pencils: everything children need to learn

Installing a Well Pump

Securing safe water, so the time children once spent fetching water becomes time for learning

Sustainability

Business That Sustains Education

Building a “cycle of self-reliance” in which local people earn income through business and reinvest the profits in education

Event

November Charity Event

Sports, art, and movement programs, along with AWAKEN Meditation led by HAL. A place for children to experience “I did it!” and “This is fun!” and to stimulate their senses

Salaries for local staff and instructors, and ongoing monitoring with our partner organizations
